「本物のマジック」

ダニエル・デネットのお気に入りでよく使い回してる一節：

I'm writing a book on magic," I expalain, and I'm asked, "Real magic?" By /real magic/ people mean miracles, thaumaturgical acts, and supernatural powers. "No," I answer: "Conjuring tricks, not real magic." Real magic, in other words, refers to the magic that is not real, while the magic that is real, that can actually be done, is /not real magic/.

「マジックについて1冊書いてるんだ」とぼくが説明すると，こう聞かれる．「本物のマジック？」 人が「本物のマジック」って言ったら，それは奇跡だとか魔術だとか超自然的な力のことだ．「ちがうよ」と答えるぼく．「手品のマジックだよ．本物のマジックじゃなくて．」 つまり，本物のマジックってのは，本物じゃないマジックのことだし，本物じゃないマジックは実際にやれるやつのことで，本物のマジックじゃない．
