in turn の訳し方


英和辞書を引くと「順番に」といった訳語があげられている in turn は,「すると」や「今度は」と訳すとしっくりくることがあります:たとえば──

Program B would subsidize insurance companies, who would in turn spend much of the money on marketing and paperwork, [...]
プログラムB の方は,保険会社に助成金を出す.{すると/今度は}保険会社がそのお金をマーケティングやら書類仕事やらに使う(…)

この例で in turn を「順番に」と訳すといまひとつピンときません.上記のように「すると」または「今度は」と訳してあげるといくらか収まりがよくなるように思います.

 念のため英英辞書を引いてみますと,「順番に」と「すると/今度は」に(おおむね)対応する語義をわけています:

1. one after the other in a particular order: The children called out their names in turn.
2. as a result of sth in a series of events: Increased production will, in turn, lead to increased profits.

語義 (1) の例文は「子供たちは順番にじぶんの名前を叫んだ」で,(2) の方は「生産が伸びると今度は利益が伸びる」です.

 べつにぼくの独創ではありませんが,英和辞書にはあまり載っていないようですので書いてみました.
